Maharashtra Faces Severe Drought-Like Conditions
Maharashtra is facing a severe and prolonged dry spell, prompting the State government to consider a formal drought declaration after crop-loss assessments. Contemporary reports show 83 talukas facing prolonged rain breaks, while 20 of Maharashtra’s 36 districts recorded rainfall deficits of at least 20%.
Current Drought Situation
- Maharashtra received about 632.5 mm rainfall against a normal 866.4 mm, a deficit of roughly 27%.
- Several regions have experienced 20–30 days or more without effective rainfall, severely affecting Kharif crops.
- Crops such as soybean, cotton, pulses and sugarcane have suffered significant moisture stress and yield losses.
- Some districts, including parts of Marathwada and adjoining regions, have reported especially serious rainfall deficiencies.
Drought Declaration
- The government is undertaking crop-damage surveys and ground verification before making a formal declaration.
- Assessment is being carried out using prescribed disaster-relief and drought-assessment norms.
- State ministers have indicated that a formal drought declaration is increasingly likely given the severity of agricultural distress.
Relief Measures Initiated
- The State has begun measures such as student fee relief, electricity-bill concessions and deployment of water tankers in affected areas.
- The government has also indicated support for farmers through crop-loss assessment and possible compensation.
- Measures relating to fodder availability and livestock support are also under consideration.
Drinking-Water Management
- Authorities have been directed to identify villages facing drinking-water shortages and prepare seasonal intervention plans.
- District administrations are expected to prioritise revival of existing water sources and strengthening village-level water-supply systems rather than relying only on tankers.
Government Response
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the administration to prepare relief measures and assess affected regions.
- Formal crop-loss assessment is expected to guide the State’s request for Central assistance under applicable disaster-relief mechanisms.
Significance
- The crisis highlights Maharashtra’s vulnerability to monsoon variability, agricultural drought and rural water stress.
- It reinforces the need for drought-resilient crops, irrigation efficiency, groundwater management, water storage and climate-resilient agriculture.
