Jarawa Tribe - The Hindu 

For the first time in the history of India's election process, 19 members from Jarawa Tribe in Andaman and Nicobar Islands had been included on the electoral roll of the special summary revision-2025 recently.

Jarawa Tribe

  • About: Indigenous tribe of the Andaman Islands classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).
  • Population: 250-400 individuals.
  • Habitat: Reside in Middle Andaman and South Andaman Islands having dense forests, mangroves, and pristine beaches.
  • Origin: Believed to be descendants of the extinct Jangil tribe who survived British colonization (1789) and World War II, despite population decline.
  • Lifestyle:
    • Hunter-forager-fishermen, known for defending their territory.
    • Renowned for their robust physique and excellent nutritional health.
    • Minimal clothing, adapted for the tropical climate.

Baltic sea now ‘high risk’ after suspected cable sabotage - The Hindu 

The Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, has said the Baltic sea is now a “high risk” zone as he met Nordic and Baltic leaders days after a suspected sabotage attack on undersea cables.

  • About: A semi-enclosed inland sea in Northern Europe, part of the North Atlantic Ocean.
  • Extent: Extends northward from southern Denmark to near the Arctic Circle, separating the Scandinavian Peninsula from continental Europe.
  • Length: ~1,600 km; Width: ~193 km; Area: ~377,000 sq.km.
  • Coastline: ~8,000 km; connects to the Atlantic via the Danish Straits.
  • Surrounding Countries: Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Finland, and Sweden.

India has improved its position by eleven slots and is now placed at 49th rank as per the Network Readiness Index 2024 (NRI 2024) report released on 21st November 2024, as against 60th rank scored in the NRI 2023 report. 

Indian Chemical Council Wins 2024 OPCW-The Hague Award - PIB 

The 2024 OPCW The Hague Award was conferred upon the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) at a ceremony during the 29th Session of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) at the Hague on November 25, 2024, in the presence of delegates from the 193 States Parties and experts from the global chemical industry from around the world.
