Antarctic Ocean Current Slowing Down Due To Melting Ice - Indian Express

A groundbreaking study has revealed that the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC)—the world’s most powerful ocean current—is slowing down due to melting ice sheets.

Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC)

  • Overview: Strongest ocean current, flowing clockwise (west to east) around Antarctica.
  • Connects: Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
  • Nature: Five times stronger than the Gulf Stream and over 100 times more powerful than the Amazon River.

  • Role:
    • Separates the Southern Ocean from other oceans at 60° S latitude.
    • Regulates Earth's climate by distributing heat, water, and nutrients.
    • Acts as a barrier preventing non-native species from reaching Antarctica.
  • Impact: Melting Antarctic ice due to global warming introduces freshwater, disrupting ACC flow.

Consequences of Slowdown:

  • Climate: More extreme weather events and altered global climate patterns.
  • Marine Ecosystems: Disrupts nutrient flow, affecting biodiversity and fisheries.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Reduces ocean's ability to absorb CO₂, accelerating global warming.
