What is Vikram-1 launch means for India

India’s first privately developed launch vehicle, Vikram-1, successfully placed multiple technology-demonstration satellites in Low Earth Orbit.
Developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, the launch makes India the third country after the US and China to possess private orbital-launch capability.

About Low Earth Orbit

  • Low Earth Orbit extends approximately from 160 km to 2,000 km above Earth.
  • Satellites in LEO generally complete one orbit in 90–120 minutes.
  • Its proximity to Earth makes it suitable for communication, Earth observation, imaging and low-latency internet services.

Significance of Vikram-1

Race for Orbital Slots

  • Although no country can own an orbit under the Outer Space Treaty, 1967, countries compete for favourable orbital shells and radio-frequency allocations.
  • Radio frequencies are coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union to prevent harmful interference.
  • Orbital access largely operates on a first-come-first-served basis, giving early entrants an advantage.
  • Mega-constellations may occupy valuable orbital positions, leading to concerns over speculative “orbital squatting.”

Limitations and Challenges

  • India remains behind major space powers in launch frequency and scale.
  • India currently lacks an operational reusable launch vehicle.
  • ISRO’s partially reusable Next Generation Launch Vehicle is expected to become operational only around the mid-2030s.
  • Space startups face high capital requirements and limited assured procurement.
  • India must improve launch infrastructure, manufacturing capacity and regulatory coordination.
