    The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean. It is bound by:
    1. Russia and Sakhalin Island in the north,
    2. North Korea in the west,
    3. South Korea in the southwest, and
    4. The Japanese archipelago in the east and south.
  • Area:
    ~377,600 square miles (978,000 sq. km).
  • Straits Connecting the Sea of Japan:
    1. Tsushima & Korea Straits – Connecting the Sea of Japan with the East China Sea (to the south).
    2. La Perouse and Tatar Straits – Connecting with the Sea of Okhotsk (to the north).
    3. Kanmon Strait—connecting with the Inland Sea of Japan (to the east).
    4. Tsugaru Strait – Connecting the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean.
