The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean. It is bound by:
- Russia and Sakhalin Island in the north,
- North Korea in the west,
- South Korea in the southwest, and
- The Japanese archipelago in the east and south.
- Area:
~377,600 square miles (978,000 sq. km).
- Straits Connecting the Sea of Japan:
- Tsushima & Korea Straits – Connecting the Sea of Japan with the East China Sea (to the south).
- La Perouse and Tatar Straits – Connecting with the Sea of Okhotsk (to the north).
- Kanmon Strait—connecting with the Inland Sea of Japan (to the east).
- Tsugaru Strait – Connecting the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean.
