India, Slovakia expand scope of partnership with MoUs in defence, tech, labour mobility-THE HINDU
India and Slovakia on Monday expanded their bilateral relationship with memoranda of agreement (MoUs) across defence, labour mobility, education, digital tech, and other sectors.
India–Slovakia Bilateral Relations
- India and Slovakia share a cordial and steadily expanding relationship based on shared democratic values, mutual respect and growing cooperation in trade, technology, manufacturing and global governance.
- Slovakia, a Central European country and a member of both the European Union (EU) and NATO, has become an important partner for India in the region.

Strategic and Diplomatic Engagement
- India and Slovakia maintain regular engagement through high-level political dialogue and ministerial-level exchanges.
- Slovakia has supported India’s claim for permanent membership of the UN Security Council, reflecting convergence on global governance reforms.
- Both countries also cooperate on issues such as terrorism, climate change, multilateralism, UN reforms and a rules-based international order.
- Slovakia has also played a constructive role within the European Union in promoting stronger India–EU relations, including cooperation on trade and investment frameworks such as the India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
Trade and Economic Cooperation
- Economic relations between the two countries have shown steady growth in recent years. Bilateral trade crossed €1 billion in 2024, reaching around €1.28 billion, compared to €858.1 million in 2023 and €711.9 million in 2022.
- India’s major exports to Slovakia include mobile phones, footwear, garments, motor vehicle parts, tyres, medicaments, seats and electrical apparatus.
- India’s imports from Slovakia mainly consist of motor vehicles, machinery, mechanical appliances, pumps, transmission shafts, measuring instruments, wires, cables and bearings.
Indian Diaspora
The Indian community in Slovakia is small but gradually growing, with around 5,000–7,000 Indians residing there. Most are engaged in IT, engineering, academics and business. The diaspora also contributes to people-to-people ties through cultural festivals, academic exchanges and community activities.
India–Slovakia Bilateral Meeting
- Economic Cooperation: Bilateral trade reached €1.28 billion in 2024; key areas include automobiles, machinery, mobile phones, garments and medicaments.
- Labour Mobility: Labour migration MoU signed to facilitate movement of workers and exchange of information.
- Social Security: Both sides agreed to conclude a Social Security Agreement.
- Education & Research: MoU signed to promote academic linkages and mobility of students/researchers in STEM and humanities.
- Defence Cooperation: Defence identified as a key pillar; Letter of Intent signed for defence technology, industry, capacity building and R&D.
- Digital Technology: MoU signed for cooperation in AI, semiconductors, start-ups, IoT and 6G standardisation.
- Counter-Terrorism: Joint Working Group on Terrorism to be formed; both condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and supported CCIT.
Overall, the India–Slovakia bilateral meeting reflects the growing importance of Central Europe in India’s foreign policy. The partnership is moving beyond traditional diplomacy towards a more comprehensive engagement in trade, labour mobility, education, defence, digital technology and counter-terrorism.
