Astra missiles
The significance of India’s Astra missiles, which Indonesia is buying
India and Indonesia reached a significant milestone in their growing strategic cooperation by signing a deal for the supply of the Astra Mk 1 ‘beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles’ (BVRAAM).
Astra Missile
Astra is India’s indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) developed by DRDO. It is designed to destroy enemy aircraft from long distances, beyond the pilot’s visual range. Astra is important for India’s air combat capability because it reduces dependence on imported missiles like Meteor and R-77. India’s export of Astra missiles to Indonesia is significant as it marks the first export of Astra to another country, where it will arm Indonesia’s Su-30 fleet.
