The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, has made the appointment of the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Members of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK).

About NCSK
- The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) was constituted in August 1994 under the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993.
- It was initially established as a statutory body for three years.
- After expiry of the statutory framework, it has continued as a non-statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Functions and Mandate
- Works for the dignity, safety, welfare and socio-economic development of Safai Karamcharis.
- Reviews government programmes aimed at removing inequalities and improving rehabilitation and welfare.
- Investigates grievances and can take suo motu cognisance of non-implementation of welfare measures.
- Monitors working conditions, health, safety, wages and rehabilitation of Safai Karamcharis.
- Submits reports and recommendations to the Central and State Governments.
- Monitors implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
- Investigates violations, advises governments on implementation and takes suo motu notice of non-compliance.
