The President-elect of the U.S., has promised to impose tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese imports to correct the huge trade deficit the U.S. has with China and also as a punitive measure to make China reduce the subsidisation of its domestic production, which make Chinese goods cheaper and attractive to American consumers as compared to locally produced American goods.

Domestic Effects

Global Effects

  • Price and Inflation
    • Raises domestic prices in U.S. markets, potentially increasing inflation if applied widely to consumer goods.
    • May moderate inflation if it reduces the U.S. trade deficit and strengthens the dollar.
  • Domestic Production
    • Shifts consumption from imports to domestic goods, boosting production and supply, which could moderate inflation
  • Trade Wars
    • Retaliatory tariffs by affected countries like China could trigger global trade wars, undermining the policy's effectiveness on U.S. trade balance.
  • Commodity Prices and Inflation
    • Could destabilize global commodity prices and worsen inflation in many countries.
